YAG Workshop, Saturday 17 May 2014
We started thinking about the Sea and had an introduction to the new YAG project in this meeting. The Youth Advisors will work together to produce an audio guide aimed at other young people sharing stories from the Museum’s main themes.
In this meeting we started thinking about the first theme, which is the Royal Navy. The Youth Advisors explored Nelson, Navy, Nation and used gallery floorplans to note what they were interested in and what was inspiring.
We then met up in the Re:Think space to exchange ideas on what was interesting. We asked questions and exchanged ideas on what sailors ate, why they joined the Navy, what was life like onboard and how did they stay in touch with family?
We then had an explore of two new exhibitions. The first, Guiding Lights, looks at safety at sea over the last 500 years.
Finally we went up to the Royal Observatory to see Longitude Punk’d, a reinterpretation of the 18th century quest for Longitude created and developed by steampunk artists. It was a good chance to see how alternative stories can be told and how playful and creative museum storytelling can be.
