YAG Workshop, Saturday 14 December 2013

It was our last YAG meeting of 2013! We visited Turner & the Sea exhibition and had the YAG meeting in the Royal Observatory Greenwich, and saw a Planetarium show. We reflected on 2013 and looked forward to 2014.

Happy holidays from the Youth Advisors!

Youth Advisors Thu and Terri share what we got up to…

When visiting Turner & the Sea exhibition, I was overwhelmed by the excitement of visiting a new exhibition that was different. One of my favourite paintings was the Battle of Trafalgar and a blue sunset. This was because these two paintings sand out from the others and I thought the textures on both were amazing. It was quite good because there were paintings that showed unfinished work with vivid colours.

After the Turner  & the Sea exhibition, we had a 5 minute break and then we went to the Planetarium to see a show called The Sky Tonight: Christmas Stars and it was about the sky and what to look for in it. I thought the show was spectacular!

The Youth Advisors also shared their ideas on what they wished they knew about the Museum:

  • The stages of, and how much effort goes into creating an exhibition
  • When the Museum was founded and why
  • How cool is the Museum?
  • How, why and who moves the exhibitions?
  • Are there any secret passages?
  • How do they organise an exhibition and how long does it take?
  • How do they handle or fix broken items?
  • How influential is society on the Museum’s work?
  • How can I get paid work or an internship here?
  • How does the Planetarium show the stars?
  • How did the ship get in the bottle?

Also, things the Youth Advisors wished the Museum knew about young people:

  • Some of us are actually interested in history and museums
  • More energetic stuff
  • Acknowledging younger people when advertising activities in the Museum
  • Raise the profile of the YAG and individuals in the Group
  • Where young people that visit the Museum come from
  • Young people like to do things related to their interests
